AUC PAMA COMPLIANCE

Ensuring the Right Clinical Decisions Across The Healthcare Workflow

Guided decisioning is a major emerging force in Healthcare at a global level.   Clinicians and practioners can’t be experts in every area and are constantly challenged by the rapid progress of studies and evolution of new knowledge.  Throughout Healthcare, organizations are augmenting their workflow infrastructure to provide their clinical staff with next generation tools that reenforce informed decisioning and alert staff when recommended procedures are not being followed.  LogicNets is a strategic platform for any organization pursuing these initiatives.  The  Clinical Decision Support (CDS) and other decisioning applications created by our healthcare customers and partners give clinicians immediate access from within the workflow to guidance and supporting reference information for a range of clinical activities including:

  • Diagnoses and treatments
  • Appropriate use validation for medications and procedures
  • Structured reporting, screening and assessments
  • Patient care management
  • And much more

Clinical Decision Support at the Point of Care

LogicNets guided CDS applications are used at the point of care to enable real-time decision-making and avert the consequences of accidental or uninformed decisions.  LogicNets is used with patients for diagnostic and treatment guidance.  It has been approved by CMS for Appropriate Use validation for procedures such as advanced imaging (see AUC for PAMA below).   The key for its great potential at point-of-care is its incorporation of  the following critical values:

Integrated. LogicNets-based CDS applications seamlessly integrate into the healthcare workflow to inject critical intelligence and access to clinical guidelines and knowledge at the moment decisions need to be made.

Non-obtrusive. LogicNets works in the background, transparently validating clinical activities against evidence-based protocols and drawing on information in the patient record.  It does not flood the user with distracting alerts.  Yet, it  can also guide clinicians visually and interactively, collecting inputs, and enforcing the high levels of accuracy and completeness required for patient care.

Responsive to expertise.  Offering a range of clinical user experiences, LogicNets caters to the needs of different users.  Non-expert staff, and even patients, can navigate in a controlled step-by-step process where decision points are simple and clear.  Yet experienced clinicians and practitioners can receive guidance with a complete graphical view of all available pathways so that they can fully understand and concur with guideline logic and get important contextual access to evidence and references.

Visual Diagnostics and Treatment Guideline Navigation

Decision support for diagnosing and treating patients can only be successful when the underlying algorithms and supporting evidence are not hidden and mysterious, but are clearly visible to the clinician.   The LogicNets Visual Guideline Navigator (VGN) presents diagnostic and treatment guidelines visually and interactively so that clinicians can quickly confirm their observations and investigate alternate pathways they may not have considered. The VGN doesn’t second guess the clinician, but rather displays the patient’s status within pathways, allowing the clinician to identify the optimal and appropriate actions. It integrates seamlessly to the patient record and uses the pre-existing patient information to identify relevant guidelines and visually highlight where the patient is positioned on the pathway.  Results can then be confirmed and observations and recommendations can be automatically submitted back into the patient record to drive the downstream workflow

Complete and Accurate Structured and Synoptic Reporting

From clinical procedures to population health research, collecting complete and accurate information is critical.  LogicNets lets you easily create intelligent and dynamic voice-enabled structured reporting applications.  Clinicians in pathology, radiology, oncology, and a wide range of other areas can greatly improve reporting productivity while also ensuring clinical quality and meeting the important data gathering objectives of population health research. Results are dynamically presented on-screen and also packaged as structured output feeding downstream workflow and systems.

Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) Validation for Advanced Imaging and Radiology

In the US, the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS) has mandated the use of automated decision support to ensure the appropriateness of advanced imaging in 8 initial priority areas.  LogicNets is a CMS-qualified Clinical Decision Support Mechanism (qCDSM) authorized to offer automated decision support services based on Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) for imaging developed by CMS-authorized medical organizations.  We have partnered with Intermountain Health to develop a CDSM service that can be accessed dynamically through integration with the electronic patient record or as a standalone portal to provide real-time validation of advanced imaging orders.  We offer our AUC for Imaging Solution, which meets all the functional requirements of the PAMA mandate, as a cloud service or as a software platform deployed within the provider’s IT infrastructure.

Patient Care Pathways

LogicNets allows organizations to automate the complex workflow of patient care, tying together the collaboration of a group of users with different roles.  The organization can quickly create a visual decision network representation of workflow, assign a community of users to participate with different roles and responsibilities.   The system steps through the network of tasks, using modeled logic to assign resources, communicate and enforce actions, monitor completion and aggregate and report on the broad range of generated data.  Workflow is constantly changing in the clinical world, and enabling the organization to control workflow automation through visual modeling provides a massive benefit as processes can be constantly refined and optimized to ensure quality outcomes and efficiencies.

Healthcare Partner Solutions

LogicNets has been used by leading healthcare organizations to create clinical decisioning applications applicable to a broad range of users.   Working with our partners, we have been able to make some of these applications directly available to the broader global healthcare community as turnkey cloud services.   The following applications based on the expertise of our partners are available directly from LogicNets:

  • Rome Foundation Decision Toolkit for Functional GI Disorders (also know as mind-gut disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome)
  • UCSF Diabetes Research Center Pro-Operative Diabetes Management Protocols
  • Intermountain Healthcare Appropriate Use Criteria for Advanced Imaging and compliance with PAMA
It took my colleagues and me a whole year to write our diabetes preoperative algorithm and less than 10 days to get it up and running on LogicNets. To our surprise, at first we found no solution, no companies – only programmers that would need months to make it happen. We then came across LogicNets and it was the perfect match.

LogicNets provided a platform that our members could work with to capture the new layers of complexity and which could deliver it online in a user-friendly format. Quite simply, the most up-to-date and authoritative body of knowledge ever created for Functional GI Disorders.
